Hour of Code 2019 #CSforGood

In a collaborative effort to increase awareness of computer science, AISD is joining the global movement to reach millions of PreK-12 grade students and teachers to encourage them to try “an Hour of Coding” during the week of December 9-15th or before. Last year, over 400 million students tried the Hour of Code.

The Hour of Code (HOC2019) is a one-hour introductory course designed to demystify computer science and show that anybody can learn the basics of programming. Our district’s goal is to have students take part in grade-level specific activities.

This year, the Hour of Code will continue inspiring student creativity with the theme Computer Science for Good. #CSforGood. Inspired by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Hour of Code 2019 will highlight how we can all use computer science to make a positive impact on our world, from writing apps to solve a local problem to using innovative ideas in data science to address global challenges.

Join AISD students, teachers, staff, and parents as we celebrate National Computer Science Education Week. We are excited to see our own MIS Computer Science engineers volunteering in classrooms along with local companies to help teach students to learn to code.

This year’s Hour of Code theme is Computer Science for Good!

  1. Houston ES is on our third year of participating in Hour of Code. Once a month all classes PreK-5th work on coding during their library time. 3rd – 5th grade work on Code.org courses and PreK-2 use BeeBots and Code & Go mice. It’s really fun to see the students super excited by this learning opportunity. It’s a great way to teach failing forward.
