Welcome to the Technology Design Team Weekly Lessons Learned! This will be a recurring feature on Friday afternoons where the Technology Design Team will share top of mind resources and learning. What are some considerations or tips for using the EduDisplay with Zoom as I set up learning spaces for my virtual and in-person students next week?
- Zoom in the Physical Classroom is a helpful document that goes through some considerations you may want to take into account as you return to using the EduDisplay and Zoom in the physical classroom.
- Things to Note:
- Could I still use the DocCam as part of my Zoom, EduDisplay, laptop setup? Yes. Take the USB that is in the red DocCam bag, plug the USB into the DocCam, and plug it into the computer. Change the output camera for Zoom from your laptop to the Lumens Document Camera by going to the little up arrow near the camera icon on Zoom.
- You can plug directly into the EduDisplay or use MiraCast if you prefer to be mobile/untethered to the EduDisplay. On your device, make sure your screen settings are for dual monitors (usually “Extend”) so that you can use your laptop as one screen and your EduDisplay as a second screen.
- NOTE: If a teacher plugs into the EduDisplay, Zoom will use the EduDisplay as an external speaker, which might lead to a feedback situation. Use the “Zoom in the Physical Classroom” document for support.

Why is a student getting a proxy authentication or connection error on their iPad or Chromebook?
A proxy error can have many different causes, and varies depending upon which device you are using (typical picture of the iPad error is on the above left, and on the chromebook is above right). One of the most common causes of a proxy error is a weak internet connection. What are ways to manage course notifications for an individual BLEND course?
- You can set notifications at the course-level to help streamline the notifications that you receive. Read about managing course notifications this Canvas guide.
- If you have been added as a co-teacher to a colleague’s BLEND course, here is another consideration: If you use the To-Do list on your BLEND Dashboard for grading purposes, you will still see submission alerts for your buddy teacher’s courses, even if you mute notifications. As a workaround, you could nickname your buddy teacher’s course with “IGNORE” in the front so that you know at a glance to disregard those submissions OR you could use the to-do list from within your individual courses instead of the dashboard, which should NOT show submissions from your buddy teacher’s students.
I’m having trouble integrating HMH in BLEND.
- First, try consulting the steps within this Textbook BLEND Course. First, enroll in the course by clicking here (https://aisdblend.instructure.com/enroll/NKJNTR).
- Then, after enrolling in the course, ensure that you have set up your HMH links correctly using this page from the course.
- We realize there are some issues accessing HMH on iPads, and we are working on troubleshooting this with HMH as quickly as possible. A Weekly Lessons Learned Update on this will be posted as soon as there is a resolution.
How can I easily message students who have not turned in work in BLEND?
- You can use the BLEND Gradebook to help you identify students who have or have not turned in work. Here is a Canvas guide on how to message all students who have not turned in work.
Tips for Google Docs and Slides Submissions for BLEND Assignments
- Use the Google LTI in Rich Content Editor, not the Google tabs in Assignment submission. GoogLTI icon will auto-set View permissions and provide teacher access to the GoogDoc.
- Even though the LTI will make the permissions change to View, have the secondary students open the Doc sharing setting and change View to Commenter role. This way, teachers can leave permanent comments about the work, within the Google Doc. When students submit using Google Submission tabs, teachers get .docx formats that they can write on, but students lose those annotations upon resubmitting.
What are some tips to help students be safe online, especially with YouTube?
- Remind students to authenticate themselves in YouTube with their AISD credentials. Students can authenticate their YouTube credentials by first ensuring that they are logged into their AISD Student Portal. Then, they can go to YouTube and click on the sign-in profile icon in the top right-hand corner.
GoGuardian can also be used with students in 3rd-12th grade on district Chromebooks.
- GoGuardian Teacher Tips Teachers can create a scene and block YouTube.com. Students will not be able to load the site, search, or play a video linked to play on YT AND embedded videos will play fine in BLEND!!!

How can I and my students help prevent eye strain from all this screen time?
- Teaching and learning on devices can be hard on our eyes. Hours of reading a bright screen can strain on our eyes. We can reduce the eye fatigue at the source, our devices, for free. Chromebooks, Windows 10 devices, Macbooks, and iPads have features to manage exposure to blue light. This blog post will help you with steps to help your eyes.
Students are getting iPad enrollment errors and/or their iPad apps are not loading properly.
- iPads that are acting unexpectedly–such as not having an app populate or not changing scenes at the anticipated hours–are often a result of the device not being officially assigned or issued to a student. If the login process was not completed for a device when issued to a student, that device will not receive updates (such as the customized layout or new apps installed). Please check to make sure that these steps were followed if the iPad is acting strangely to ensure that it is assigned to the student.
Why are students’ iPad scenes changing at different times of the day?
- Please see this document to learn more about school layout (7am-4pm M-F) and home layout (all other hours), and how these different settings impact deleting apps from devices (and storage space).
